When you’re this cool it’s hard to think of ten embarrassing songs you like…
Somehow I managed.
I’m not really that cool. I’ll prove it to you. Here are ten musical deals I know the words to, sing along with, and in general won’t admit I adore. I tried to stick with songs from the Hippie Sounds era — which was tough because frankly, I think most 60-70 stuff is cool. I had to use my sister who is in town and more up on the “what’s cool” meter to help.
Here we go…
1. Ride Captain Ride by Blues Image: Frankly it’s embarrassing that I know the name of the band who sings this. I bet 95% of the world has no clue.
2. Come Monday by Jimmy Buffett: Now my sister says this song is cool. However, I think it’s pretty dorky. I LOVE this song and never told anyone for years. Cool; not cool?
3. Amie by Pure Prairie League: Ok, what’s really embarrassing about liking this song is that I never knew who sang it. I really wanted it on LP. Before I got smart enough to know that I could have just looked up the lyrics online I’d go into record stores and sing it to the employees and they’d all say, “Nope, I don’t know who sings that.” Finally some guy (likely felt sorry for me) and told me that it was Pure Prairie League. It took me another year to hunt down the LP. That is way too much effort for this song.
4. Take A Letter, Maria by R.B Greaves (I think): I love this song but am sketcy on who actually sings it. I have it on some old cassette tape and while I like it a lot I never hunted it down. Why is this song not cool. Have you ever heard the lyrics (Bad…really bad).
“Last night, as I got home, about a half past ten
There was the woman I thought I knew in the arms of another man.
I kept my cool, I ain’t no fool. Let me tell ya what happened then.
I packed some clothes and I walked out ..and I ain’t goin’ back again.
Chorus
So take a letter Maria..address it to my wife
Say I won’t be coming home..gotta start a new life
Oh Take a letter Maria..address it to my wife
Send a copy to my lawyer..gotta start a new life
You’ve been many things but most of all a good secretary to me
And it’s time like this I feel, you’ve always been close to me
Was I wrong to work nights, to try to build a good life?
All work, and no play has just cost me a wife
Chorus
When a man loves a woman, it’s hard to understand
That she would find pleasure in the arms of another man
I never really noticed, how sweet you are to me
It just so happens I’m free tonight, would you like to have dinner with me?
Chorus”
5. It’s so sad how much I like Rod Stewart. I’m ok I guess because I like his better stuff… I mean I’m not going around singing that, “If You Think I’m Sexy” tune. I do go around singing the one below quite often.
6. Journey. Notice that I did not list a song. That’s because I like most Journey 70s songs. The only thing I’ve got going for me is that I don’t like 80s Journey. Although, liking 70s Journey is bad enough to label me as totally uncool. Last year I drove from New Mexico to Oregon and back again by myself. Well, at some point in Idaho (before Boise) I put Journey in the stereo and I don’t think I took it out until I hit Portland. How sad is that.
7. Kenny Loggins - Danny’s Song : It’s just so sticky sweet — I liked this song even when I was going to ska shows and jumping in pits. My friends would have made sooooo much fun of me.
8. Lady by The Little River Band: In case you don’t know this song, here are some of the lyrics…
So lady
Let me take a look at you now
You’re there on the dance floor
Making me want you somehow
Oh lady
I think it’s only fair
I should say to you
Don’t be thinkin’ that I don’t want you
‘Cause maybe I do
Um, yeah. Until tonight I had no idea who sang this song, Lady. Or the title. I somehow know all the lyrics and always sing it though. Tonight I sang them to my sister who also had no clue. I finally found them online.
9. Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass: I’m sorry but any song that has lyrics like this is so not ok.
“The sailors say “Brandy, you’re a fine girl” (you’re a fine girl)
“What a good wife you would be” (such a fine girl)
“Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea”
I bought an entire LP just to get the song Brandy. Dorky.
10. I once listed to this song below for weeks on end; at least once a day. I got obsessive. Being obsessive about the song below is not very cool.
What are your most geeky song secrets?

Oh my god, “Danny’s Song” is one of my absolute favourite songs ever. There’s something about it that calms me down no matter what sort of mood I’m in :-).
I agree with you though … your niche is so cool finding guilty secrets is a tall order. :-)

How sad is it that I love most of these songs. I knew who sang Ride Captain Ride and can even sing the whole song for you (73 men sailed off, from the San Francisco Bay….)
Amie will always be one of my all time favorite songs and Lady by the Little River Band will always bring back memories of my freshman year in high school. (Yeah I’m that old.)
Except Journey. You can’t make me like Journey.

Lauren ~ Danny’s Song is pretty soothing; just my old school friends would die.
Deb ~ At Blog Expo next year I will bring Journey and we will rock out ;)
Scott ~ The problem is that Rod song is way to catchy. I sing it far too much.
Mike ~ “Dynamite” Maybe next we should do a words we use but shouldn’t list (I’m guilty too).
Albert; sad, sad that again where is your list buddy and two Rod rocks although there is something to be said for dressing well and Rod has no clue in that department.
Jyle ~ See above.

I know, I didn’t join the form and jump on board; but I did post a list yesterday.
And, I will never, never, never say that anything Rod Stewart did rocks. It’s hard to express in words my distaste for him.

Fair enough. I hate some music too. Like um, maybe oh, Def Leopard. They make me want to hurl. I’ll come see your list.
