What Day Did the Music Die?
I’ve been thinking about this lately. Maybe because of the anniversary of Jerry’s passing. Maybe because the question pops up in certain circles from time to time and I’m curious what you think.
I can tell you where I was when I heard Jerry left the world. I’ve got the newspaper clippings from when Lennon was shot. But maybe for you it was when Jim broke on through to his other side. Kurt Cobain; not of this era of music but a huge shock to the music industry.
What death in music was the most monumental for you? Was there one?
Do you think there’s any truth to the music actually vanishing or loosing quality when someone leaves the industry? Was there a turning point for you? I have an opinion (always) but also want to see what you think.
So, when or even, did the music die? Think about it.
Here’s some lyrics to get you going.
Fare you well, my honey
Fare you well, my only true one
All the birds that were singing
Have flown except you alone
Going to leave this broke-down palace
On my hands and my knees I will roll, roll, roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time - in my time - I will roll, roll, roll
In a bed, in a bed
by the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul
River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
all the way back home
It’s a far-gone lullaby
sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I’ve come
since I first left home
Going home, going home
by the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul
Going to plant a weeping willow
On the bank’s green edge, it will grow, grow, grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go - the river roll, roll, roll
Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

Great song. i actually used part of it in my post(late) about Jerry’s death.
As far as the death affecting me, i would have to go with garcia. that one felt like a freind had died.
Lennon’s death got me interested in the Beatles music(morbid, i know, but no one in my family really listened to them, it was my first real taste of the Beatles) so that one is pretty big, too.

You reminded me of this post. Which I never did go back and comment on. I think Garcia too. That was just huge but IMO music never really dies. There’s always the people to carry it on. Your Lennon story is interesting. It’s strange how we can like people or bands, writers, etc. not of our generation; who we’ll never possibly see or know in the current yet they become so important. Thanks for stopping by, as always.
