Top Five Hippie Hideaways

by sgraham on January 23rd, 2008

“Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac A little voice inside my head said, ‘Don’t look back. You can never look back.’” Boys of Summer by D. Henley

So where do you go when you need a place to air out that tye dye? I’ve picked my favorite five top hippie hideaways in the USA where dreds can run freeeeeeee! Feel free to add your own spots in the comments section!

  1. The entire state of Oregon
From Ashland to Portland and hitting Eugene, Bend and all points in between, the green state of Oregon gives all hippies one big gushy hug.
  1. Berkeley, California
I bought my very first vinyl at an old shop there when I was twelve: Meet the Beatles. Gotta love it. Go Bears (hi dad!)!
  1. St. Augustine, Florida
Love, love, love this place. Instant karma, great place to kick back and relax. People are friendly, the beach is gorgeous. Where else can you drink a beer while feeding crocodiles at the farm?
  1. Maui, Hawaii
Like I need an excuse to head to Maui. Incredible people, lovely black sand beaches and all the tye dye you could ask for.
  1. Mystic Hot Springs, Utah
Okay, I haven’t been here (yet) but friends love it!

Hmmm, Except Solame, oh I mean, Salem, they hate hippies there. But dead on about the rest of Oregon. I love Berkeley too. I had to go to People’s Park - because it was in a Joni song. Oh, and the gardens at the university rock.

Salem’s in its own bubble - I don’t even count it as in Oregon most of the time (sorry Salemites). How did we let it in there in the first place?

Born in Oakland, haven’t lived on the West Coast for 20 years—still a Berkeley girl at heart.
