The Mighty Mighty Bosstones; the old school covering even older school
I really like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and since they have roots in Marley, a Hippie Sounds favorite AND since I’ve been in a ska-core kind of mood today, lets roll with that. They’ve been called third wave ska; but that title sort of lost meaning in the 80s or early 90s — when do you think the switch happened? Basically I’ve heard new, as in 2003 ska bands called, “third wave ska” so the meaning, I’m thinking, is lost.
Still, if you want to go there, using the original definition, third wave covered bands that were jamming on old school Jamaican club ska who then added some punk, rock, metal, folk and whatever else sounded good. They stirred it up and served it in generous portions to the early 80s scene — third wave. I’ve also heard them frequently referred to as a 2 Tone band, a punk (huh?) only band, and twice as “pop” (oh no); which begs the question, is it time to end titles and just enjoy the music? Probably.
I like a lot of ska. I just happen to be listening to the Bosstones today. The Bosstones were around for a long time, almost 20 years, have covered the great Bob Marley, played the Warped Tour, put their music in a lame movie, and in a strange twist appeared on a Sesame Street special. Plus of course, much, much more. They sort of did everything a ska band could do before calling it quits in 03. They had a nice ride.
One thing I found is that it is way hard to find a good video clip of them playing. The live shots are overly loud and I swear shot with old cam recorders that were missing a battery. That friends, leaves us with some actual video choices… Rascal King, Someday I Suppose (which is a song that I’m actually not a fan of, it’s okay, but… no), Simmer Down (too quiet). Let’s go with their first single, Where’d You Go? (I’m 98% sure it was their first single) — while I do like them a lot, I’m not the ultimate fan thus, don’t follow all their moves, why do you think I’m writing this blog and not the ska blog. If you know better feel free to let me know.
Right or wrong I really like this song. It makes me happy every time I hear it. I don’t care if the video is dull or that it was in the lame movie above.
