The Favorite 5: Pink Floyd
Some would argue that Pink Floyd can’t be catorgorized as a musical choice for Hippie Sounds. I disagree and here’s why.
I’ve known room fulls of hippie (and other) types hanging out trying the Wizard of Oz / Dark Side of the Moon experiment that begs to differ.- They toured with (among others) Hendrix in the late 60s.
- Jeff Beck was originally considered as Syd Barret’s replacement.
- There’s the album More, which of course covered the Schroeder hippie road vision.
- Mainly though they belong here because Pink Floyd came about in the late 60s, with a different, more psychedelic sound than what was typical but still straight out of the 60s they are. Far more than half of their albums were released before the 80s. Although as a kid, I mainly and mistakenly thought of them as an 80s band due to The Wall’s movie release in 82.
My feelings on Pink Floyd are somewhat scattered. They wrote albums I love and some I can’t stand. The let’s change band members nature of this band as a whole, kind of bugs me. Each time they fired someone or someone quit the sound changed quite a bit. Sometimes that’s an asset and sometimes it just bothers me. For this band it’s the latter.
That said, I’m more a side fan of Pink Floyd than a head over heels fan. I follow what’s up with them to a point, I own most of their records, but overall they fall lower on the list of bands I like. Thus this challenge should be pretty easy for me. I know that there are huge fans out there that this will be a harder challenge for; so good luck.
My favorite 5 by Pink Floyd are…
- Wish You Were Here
- Comfortably Numb
- Eclipse
- Hey You
- Ibiza Bar
That was actually a little harder than I thought. I forgot how many good songs were on The Wall. What are your favorite 5 by the ever eclectic Floyd?

Interstellar Overdrive
Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun
One Of These Days
Arnold Layne
Careful With That Axe Eugene
In no particular order; I loathe just about everything from Dark Side Of The Moon onward - all that obsession with sound. Meh.

That’s funny I almost listed Interstellar Overdrive — but changed my mind at the last minute. I’m surprised to see it. Sound overload: That’s one of my issues with newer Floyd as well. I like the Wall — but not the sound based songs so much. I like a little lyrics with my music :)
Good list.

Wow Paticus, some interesting choices. You go for the more obscure PF which is cool. And double cool that you picked Wish You Were Here. That’s one of my favorite songs overall — not just by this band.
