The Favorite 5 Challenge: Jimi Hendrix
When I was a kid (well 18…on) I worked in a music store. We used to do this deal where we’d post up a big sign each month that said stuff like, “Staff Desert Island Picks, Staff’s Best Tunes” and so on.
Two issues I had with this were one, it made us seem like we were trying too hard to be the ‘cool’ kids (saying we had the best choices) and two, it was always hard to narrow all the bands in the world down to favorites.
But on the positive side, it was very interesting to see everyone’s favorites (like, who knew classical guy liked Madonna) and it makes you really dig deep and consider what is you like about bands, or a band.
I think we’ll do this here. If people seem to like it we’ll keep it up. If not I’ll stop. I’m very interested in seeing if you (and me) can keep it to 5 and 5 only favorites tunes by one band or musician. This will obviously be harder with certain musicians and bands than others — so this week I randomly picked a mid-level favorite of mine to kick it off:
You can say why these are your faves or just leave it to a list. I’ve talked enough, so I’m stopping with a list this week.
Jimi Hendrix:
My favorites 5 tunes by this legend, in no particular order…
1) Hey Joe
2) Castles Made of Sand
3) Are You Experienced
4) Manic Depression
5) Red House
It got tough near the end.
What are your 5 Hendrix favorites?

My son Charlie favors “Little Wing” and “All Along the Watchtower” and “The Wind Cries Mary.”

Being a bit of a nut for hard rock ‘n’ roll and the electric guitar, I must bow to Jimi and praise my top five:
1) Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
2) Purple Haze
3) Hey Joe
4) Spanish Castle Magic
5) Red House
Then again, this list doesn’t mean much. I love the man’s whole catalog. Thanks again, Jimi, for rocking both earth and space!

Hmmm, Hey Joe is more popular than I’d imagined it would be… Interesting.
