Photographs & Memories: A Random Rant About Stuff I Can’t Have

by Jennifer on September 15th, 2007

Since the last post I regained my voice but not by much. You know I don’t usually NEED to see movies and all of a sudden there are all these cool flicks out. I’m a huge musical fan. As has been duly noted before most of my music tastes are related in part (or even one might say largely) to musicals of the hippie genre persuasion.

So this has been a fairly exciting year for me as far as feature films go. There’s the Stones movie Shine A Light — which as I correctly estimated has been postponed. Then there’s the whole Dylan movie extravaganza and now Across the Universe. Shine A Light I could do or not but both of the latter I’m hell bent on seeing and I don’t even much like to go sit still in a theater. I get fidgety.

I’ve been brooding all day because Across the Universe is opening today but only in a few cities and my city doesn’t happen to be cool enough to feature flicks that play limited special engagements. Thus I have to wait for it to open everywhere.

Dylan’s movie isn’t launching until November so basically at this second I’m at a movie standstill. Since that’s the case we’re going to discuss books instead. Actually one book.

In an ironic twist I also can’t get the damn book because it’s not out yet either but I’m waiting. I’ve been following the site of one Nathan Farb for a good part of the summer. I noticed his site a while back because he has this great looking book coming out called Summer of Love.

One, I LOVE black and white photography. Two, I especially love when a photo captures humans in a way we probably won’t see again and in a way that speaks more than words. I really like Farb’s photos as they do this perfectly.

From Farb’s website:

“This series of photographs were made as the Lower East Side morphed into the East Village in the late 60’s. The book is in its final stages of design. I am still looking at possible publishers, if anyone has any ideas please send them to me.”

Um, can someone publish the book so I can get a copy please. The pictures are just amazing. You can see some right here.

He’s even got some fine photos of Mr. Morrison at Fillmore East.

Ah, books and movies I can’t get my hands on. Good times.

On a much happier note Farb also has a beautiful collection of photographs in a book called Adirondack Wilderness; a book more suited to perhaps my green living blog but since we’re already talking about Farb I’ll plug it here. Adirondack Wilderness is full (it appears) of color shots but stunning shots all the same.

And many, many more breathtaking shots — visit his site and see for yourself. And if you happen to be a publisher then I think you should consider the Summer of Love project. Seriously, who doesn’t want a good summer of love book? I know I would.

Would you?
