New Dead Album Release: Three From the Vault
The long awaited, yet somewhat over analyzed former bootleg Three from the Vault by the Grateful Dead is finally here. This double disc actually arrived on the scene a few days ago but I’m just now getting around to posting about it.
If you have Deadhead friends this album was always easy enough to obtain. As far as line-up of tunes goes — it’s not one of my favorite albums. In some circles it’s reached legend status and the CD release has been long anticipated. I think that’s mainly because some people think the harder to obtain the better it must be as far as music goes.
I’m not saying don’t get it; just know it’s not one of their best shows ever.
But, it’s a good addition to the collection of Dead albums especially if you don’t have the bootleg you should get this album for the historic significance at least. Bob Weir was composing and Bill Kreutzmann was drumming at this point (both important Dead history markers).
The tunes on this album, recorded in 1971 during a stint at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York have all been fully mastered. Everyone I know who’s heard this new version says the sound is amazingly clear and unbelievable. I’m sticking with the scratchy old school version so I can’t say, but I may get it just to have it and then I’ll report back on the sound quality.
Here’s the musical line up; including 22 actual songs and some extras (as per Dead usual):
- Two Ditties
- The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down
- Spring Song
- Truckin’
- Loser
- Cumberland Blues
- Hurts Me Too
- Bertha
- Playing In The Band
- Deal
- Dark Hollow
- Smokestack Lightnin’
- China Cat Sunflower
- I Know You Rider
- Greatest Story Ever Told
- Johnny B. Goode
- Bird Song
- Easy Wind
- Deal
- That’s It For The Other One
- Cryptical Envelopment
- Drums
- The Other One
- Wharf Rat
- Good Lovin’
- Casey Jones
I think that a couple more mellow tunes would have rounded the set out better. What do you think?
