Judy Collins Interview about Beatles Tunes and More

by Jennifer on September 3rd, 2007

Judy CollinsYou may have heard about Collins release in June of this year, Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney. Collins released the album on her personal label Wildflower Records and has been touring as of late to promote it. On the album Collins covers such tunes as:

And I Love Her, We Can Work It Out, Good Day Sunshine, and more. Being a HUGE Beatles fan and not so much a fan of Judy, and even less of a cover song fan I was skeptical to say the least. It’s not that I don’t like Collins music; I do like some of it but well, I explained it back here. Anyhow, I gave it a listen and I have to say it is an extremely impressive album.

In fact I’d go so far as to say buy it asap, you won’t be disappointed. Collins seems born to sing the tunes on this album and her voice is as beautiful now as it was 30 years ago. Strangely, two of the songs I was most concerned about when I first heard about this album (Hey Jude and Golden Slumbers) turned out to be my two favorites on the album. She covers them flawlessly and her Blackbird cover is stunning as well.

The only tune I felt was off was I’ll Follow the Sun — she had a weird country (?) deal or something going on that threw me. But other than that get the album. If you like Collins already you’ll love it, if you just like her some (like me) it may make you appreciate her more. If you love the Beatles you don’t have to worry because she covered them well.

Anyhow, the thing that prompted this post is a killer interview I read today in the Chicago Sun Times. In the interview Collins talks about the Beatles, her tour, her thoughts on the past and future — it’s a great interview. Collins is funny and charming and if you like her it’s a must-read. After, go check out Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney. You’ll like it, I promise.
