If You Need A Fix…

by Jennifer on December 9th, 2007

I had to run into the city just now for something. My city is Portland (Oregon not Maine). Portland at night is one of the most beautiful visions ever. The layout of Portland was extremely well done. Just the right combination of old school, tall, and shiny mixed with tight blocks and art. Plus, of course it sits on the water which is nice — not that you want to go in the water (yikes pollution). At night when you’re up on I5, headed south from Washington the city sits to your right and just twinkles perfectly in the sky and on the water. This is especially true in the rain; which obviously is not uncommon here.

Tonight not only did the city look amazing but my radio was playing all the songs of my youth — it was really odd. There was some sort of Nine Inch Nails marathon going on and then Janes and Soundgarden. It was weird but shot me back to when I was young which always makes me a little reminiscent. I spent a large part of my teen and young adult years smashing around in clubs and the concert scene in Portland — most of that at night and most of that in the rain. So tonight felt very old school.

cherrypoppin1.jpgAlthough music of the 60s and 70s is my mainstay I also am fairly partial to music of the 90s. I went to so many shows during that decade that I lost count. I wish I’d held onto my concert tickets. Back in the day it seemed unimportant but now I wish I had them because I can’t remember when I saw who or how many times.

Lesson; hold on to your ticket stubs kiddos; you’ll thank me later. Shows I know I saw (because of course you don’t forget everything) included Porno for Pyros, Faith No More, Hole (yikes), Veruca Salt, Billy Jack, Sweaty Nipples, Jollymon, Pop Will Eat Itself, Zebrahead, Everclear, Village Idiot, Skankin’ Pickle, Alice In Chains, EMF (what the!), The Readymen, Black Happy, along with a slew of other 90s bands both local and not. Some I liked and some well, not so much. Back then a show was a show was a show though. If there was the promise of music and dancing in a small dark cramped space then I’d go.

I also saw Less Than Jake and the Daddies more times than was clearly logical. To say I was obsessed with both bands would be a massive understatement. I’m pretty sure I saw the Daddies alone around 25 times or so.

pezcore.jpgThat’s what I was thinking about tonight after my jaunt through the city, which made me think about fixes, because we all have them. Many of us are partial to one or two major music scenes but digress to another from time to time. I mainly swing with the hippie music scene but have massive side affairs with 90s music and a much smaller diversion into headbanger music from time to time.

To get my fix I spend a lot of time at b5media’s The Production Side — my favorite 90s music blog. Poor Albert who mans The Production Side is likely sick to death of me. Not that it will stop me from heading over to read about the Screaming Trees, Nirvana, and Stone Temple Pilots.

You have a favorite music genre right? Jack of all music trades are rare so what’s your favorite to end all favorites? What’s your fix? Or in other words, which music genre is second in line to your favorite? Is it close or far off from what you normally listen to?

*Note: To keep this on the hippie up and up there is a component of this post that’s related to 70s music — can you tell me which part? Also, upcoming soon (very soon I’m thinking) what to get your hippie loving friend for the holidays.

    Alright, another plug : )

I’m anal about saving my ticket stubs, because you need some sort of material thing that said you are a show.

Anyways, besides the 90’s alternative scene, I enjoy the era you blog about. Even though it was before my time, I love The Beatles the most, but I also enjoy The Beach Boys, Hendrix, The Stones, Zeppelin, Neil Young, Bowie, blah, blah, blah the list could go on.

Good that you save your stubs. I guess a lot of people do (everyone’s smarter than me).

Ah you like old timer music cool. Except, I hate the Beach Boys. I like one song by them the rest are so peachy keen and girl-bent that I can’t take it. My head almost explodes if I have to hear them. Oddly the song I do like by them I super love — go figure.

How can you not like the Widow Cobain? You know she was a regular at Mary’s *wink* before that whole “I think I’ll be a rock star and screw up Nirvana” schtick.

And yes, I keep my stubs.

Stacey~ Because Hole sucked ass in concert. I don’t love it when a band is pretty cool on disc and then can’t perform in concert. All miss widow Cobain did was try to show her panties — at La Luna too so I was right up at the stage. It was not pretty. See why the “Yikes” :)
