I’m Not There; The New Multiple Personality Style Bio About Bob Dylan

by Jennifer on August 15th, 2007

I don’t know if you’ve heard of this yet; but I’m intrigued. Very.

I’m Not There is slated for a September 7th release in Italy and I’m hearing that it hits the states anywhere from September 21st to November 21st. Dates so far seem very iffy. I looked and can’t even seem to find an official movie site yet — weird. If you see one send a link my way.

The whole premise is bizarre. The film directed by Todd Haynes is splitting Dylan’s character into multiples played by Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin (yes click this link to see who he is), and Ben Whishaw.

Each of the six playing Dylan appear to go by different names (not Bob) in the movie and embodies a different Dylan era. Dylan approved of this feature bio; a first in Dylan movie history. So far, details are sketchy so don’t quote me on this but some of the different times of Dylan will include his childhood, the 60s folk scene, his vanishing act (or attempt to) from public view and his later re-emergence. Also, the director somehow is supposedly including actual events usually hidden from the media such as his family life.

I can’t stand Richard Gere. Besides Matt Damon (ugh) he’s probably one of my least favorite actors ever. BUT that aside, I cannot wait to see this film. I’m mesmerized by the entire idea. The legendary music of Dylan is covered by various artists including Sonic Youth.

Rolling Stone has a slick photo slide show of the film in process.

This movie is packed with stars but the most interesting to me is David Cross as Allen Ginsberg. I was a huge Arrested Development fan and Cross played Tobias a part in which he shines but it’s not a part that screams, “I can also play legendary poets” AT ALL. I’m also sort of a Ginsberg freak so my first (nervous) thought was Cross as Ginsberg; huh?

But a clip has slipped out as clips are known to do; so you can see for yourself that Cross is actually completely well-suited to Ginsberg. In this clip Cate Blanchett is playing Bob.

How kooky is this? I can’t wait.

I KNOW! That soundtrack is way cool. As long as they don’t let Richard Gere sing, it’s all good. I love Richie Havens, Pearl Jam, Jack, and Sonic Youth. It should be amazing. Dylan’s one of the few artists who releases everything on vinyl so with his say maybe I’ll be able to score the soundtrack in my favorite form.
