Hippie names
The mother of five girls, I’m a rather … creative … name giver (and speller). Blame it on my Oregon upbringing or I simply like the way it rolls off my tongue, I’ve gotten my share of odd looks from the parents of the multitudes of Emilys and Ashleys. Moving to conservative Virginia eight years ago made it even worse but at least I wasn’t as flamboyant as some of the ideas listed on Hippy Names. I do have three of the names listed: Wynter, Lily and Vyolette (my spellings) though Rowyn and Syenna didn’t make the cut - eh, next year.
Here are some of my favorites for the newest generation of hippie babies!
- Blu
- Petal
- Ryvre (SO close to naming Vyolette this one)
- Joplin
- Celeste
- Cloud
- SnowPhish (??)
- Moon (Wynter’s middle name)
- Om
- Understanding (awww)
- And by popular demand- Cedar!

I’m glad My parents were not hippies cause if I had a name like Juniper or something like that it wouldn’t look very cool on my blog, plus I probably would have been made fun of a lot in highschool, the military…well pretty much it would have ruined my life.
In other words…I’m glad I have a simple name.

Fair enough. But let me tell you about a boy named Scott I knew as a child. One day while in jr. high, a friend and I were walking past his house. We glanced in the window and there he was in his undies posing in the mirror. Although we probably scarred him for life with our laughter, I learned that not all simple names fit the inner hippie we hide inside. (Sorry Scooter, if you’re reading this)
Scott - put down your headbangin’ riffs and become one with the tiny little SnowPhish hidden inside.
Ohhhmmm

I have a little hippie musical taste inside me…but I can never conform to the way of life.
And quit “Glancing” in people windows…

Hey, you didn’t put my boy’s name on here! What’s up with that? Well, maybe it’s not that hippie. Cedar Blue. He’s named after a tiny Montana town.
I like it though. Except, for most people say, “Did you say “PETER”?” That sucks. Like I’d name a child Peter. (no offense Petes of the world).

GAH! How could I have forgotten Peter, er, Cedar? That child is much too cool to be left out of any list. And I’m still waiting for my monster Christmas card…

LOL - I have stumbled on to your site twice today on totally different google searches!
My son’s name is “Ranen” - sounds like –> rainin’. We always get “Did you say Raymond?”
It’s a fitting name for Oregon… but it’s meaning is actually “To sing joyously”
