Do Vinyl Collectors Attract Crazies?

by Jennifer on July 29th, 2007

Seemingly so. I’ll let you determine if I mean crazy people or crazy vinyl.

People find out that I’m a vinyl collector and give me, what else, vinyl!

I don’t believe in turning down a box of records because frankly, you just never know what kind of hidden gem may be in that box. But still… some of the stuff people give me is insane. Some of the albums I inherited are worse. And along the same lines I have a few weird items that I don’t listen to per say but are rockin’ cool in a very eclectic way.

The worst part is I have a really hard time getting rid of albums; even bad ones so they do build up. The last time I moved I made myself go through my stacks and gave many away. But it tugged at my soul.

A few ‘albums’ I own that are really bad:

This is all stuff that I either inherited or was given, by some poor uninformed individual. I keep thinking there may be a way to use them. Alas, I haven’t found a way yet. Some of them are even 80s wonders that I somehow have in vinyl form.

I know, The Point was big in some circles in the 70s. I just think the music is kind of lame.

Sometimes, there’s nothing you can say.

And then sometimes, even less.

No where near as bad as the two above, but still…

Two albums I own that are bad and embarrassing but I sometimes sneak and listen to:

Infinity

The worst part: This is not the only Journey album I own. Yikes.

The other album I was going to show is so wacky I can’t even find a picture of it. And it’s not worth the time to get one. It’s called Sound Explosion it was, at one point an “as seen on T.V” album and it’s terribly tacky but I love it. Here’s some of the line up:

  • Abba
  • Barry Manilow
  • K.C. and the Sunshine Band
  • Outlaws
  • Hot Chocolate

But the artists above are not why I have it. I own this album specifically for one song. Amie by Pure Prairie League. It could not be more sad. It’s a long story. The short version is I really wanted this song on vinyl and my good pal Sara found it.

The coolest fun vinyl I own:

sing again with the chipmunks 1st ed.

This was originally released in 1960. I actually own the 2nd version released in 1961 with the folks below on the cover. The cover is exactly the same other than they inserted the cartoon characters. The one above actually is a little creepy but I thought I’d show the original. It was my dad’s when he was a kid. I loved it when I was a kid and now my son loves it. Talk about some vinyl use! It’s in great shape too (amazing).

I really have some bad albums. I keep waiting for people to only give me rare Dead vinyl I want or other cool stuff on my wish list.

So, what albums do you own that are down right embarrassing, terrible, or too fun for words.?

Also, a link tip: Robert Burke over at Blogcritics has a great funny article about the worst album cover art ever. It’s older and I don’t think he’s talking about vinyl in particular but if you need a good laugh check it out. His collaborated rankings are smack on. The only part I don’t agree with is that he appears to think that girls don’t like Rush (not true) but still way worth a read.

I was wondering if you could help me, I have a huge collection of albums I would like to sell, I would prefer to sell in one lump sum. I have about 800. What is the best way to go about this.

Man, I don’t know. If you go Ebay or something it’s gonna cost an arm and a leg in shipping. If I had that many albums I’d either hit the record stores or have a garage sale where you advertise how many records you’ve got.

I highly doubt you can sell that many albums at once. There’s no way you have 800 records that suit one person’s taste and record stores are fairly picky. Maybe someone would take the lot of them if you say, charged 500 for the bunch but you could make more (depending on condition) bu selling to shops or holding a sale.

If you do sell then all at once let me know how you did it because that would be interesting.
