Cat Stevens: Can we just focus on the music please?
Yesterday I obviously mentioned that today is the amazing Cat Stevens birthday — something likely overshadowed by Harry Potter. But I’m more interested in Stevens.
One of the, in my opinion, larger news stories of the summer is that Stevens, or as he’s known now, Yusuf Islam performed at Live Earth. I wish I’d have been there. I really do. I’ve loved Stevens music my entire life. I own the entire collection of Cat Stevens music available on LP (except one rare item). I own full collections of various artists so that’s not a huge deal but I think he was the first artist that I did that with.
“Which is a more dangerous song, Peace Train or Moonshadow?”
~ Alan Colmes to Richard Schwartz
There was some controversy of course, around Stevens even being allowed to attend and perform at Live Earth. Personally, I wish we could just stick to his music. Stevens current website really says it all. From Small Kindness to his new Honorary Doctorate for his work for decreasing the gap between Western and Islamic cultures… It’s just surprising that these fears about him keep surfacing.
At the start of the month (July 8th), News Hounds posted what I thought was a brilliant commentary on the Live Earth event and the Gore / Stevens slam featured on Fox News.
For those who haven’t seen it, here’s the video. After visit News Hounds and read the brilliant post. In a bit I’ll be back; I’m hoping with a Live Earth video. If you’ve been to his site lately or seen any of the clips floating around you already know that Stevens still sounds amazing. I was very impressed with his live performance.
