Album Cover of the Week

by Jennifer on August 4th, 2007

This week…

buckingham & nicks

When I was a kid this one of my favorite covers — maybe I thought it was sort of rebel since they were naked. I don’t know for sure but it’s a great cover and a nice album.

Released in 1973, it’s a fairly rare vinyl, depending on who you ask. I’m lucky that I inherited a nice original copy because I’ve seen it around the web for anywhere from $14 - $280. It was re-released in 76. Fans lament this album because it’s never been released on disc. There are rumors that surface every few years about it being released on CD, but unless I missed it, (always a chance) it hasn’t been as of yet. There’s even a petition which I personally refuse to sign.

I don’t think the LP is as rare as folks make it out to be because I’ve seen it around a few times in bins. Not in great shape though and usually at around $20+ which for me is more than I like to pay unless I’m seriously in love with an album. If I saw it at $15 or under I’d pick up an extra though.

There are 10 tracks on this album. Don’t Let Me Down Again, shows the direction they were headed towards in Fleetwood Mac — but with a tad more twang. In fact that song was eventually recorded by Fleetwood Mac for the live album they did. Another good tune, Crystal was eventually recorded on the self titled Fleetwood Mac album. An inside glimpse:

The inside cover has Stevie Nicks listed as Stevi Nicks. Not sure if it’s a typo on the original release or if she used to spell her name this way. But it is different. This is one of those good albums that actually lists all the lyrics inside. I love that.

And an old shot from the original cover shoot:

I really love this photo. Stevie Nicks looks so pretty, not so made up as she sometimes did in later years. Buckingham doesn’t look too bad either.

There are some huge Buckingham and Nicks fans out there. But I’d pause at saying that this is an amazing album. There are some amazing moments on this record. One of my most favorite songs ever is on here, Long Distance Winner. Crystal and Stephanie are both great.

The total package has some flaws, like Lola and Frozen Love (sorry Frozen Love fans). Still, it’s really worth purchasing if you’re a fan of either of these two artists. It’s very cool to hear Buckingham and Nicks’ voices together when they were so young and just emerging onto the scene. If you want it on CD, bootlegs are easy enough to find, but I really recommend this one on vinyl. It’s old and kinda rough by nature; listen to it that way.

[Back cover and inside cover photos via here, many thanks since my LP won’t fit in my too small scanner.]

Wow! Stevie looks good! I have never seen her like that before. Well, naked but also so natural looking, lol! Nudity sells. Wait, sex sells. Oh whatever!

You are doing an awesome job on this blog! I love it. Your hippie sounds may grow on me yet. Some of them remind me of my childhood. :)

I know, she looks so much better without the glam. Most of us do, I think. Nudity must sell somewhat because I’ve loved this album forever. Still, the cover draws you in but the music makes you want to stay.

Thanks for coming by; maybe it will grow on you — maybe you’ll be able to get your country blog to grow on me… stranger things have happened.
