Ted Nugent: Wishing All the Hippies A Happy July 4th!
I’m hoping that my U.S.A readers had an amazing 4th. Complete with some icy cold drinks, good food, and of course, rocking tunes. Nugent was sending out another sort of tidings to “stoned, dirty, stinky hippies” everywhere yesterday via his lame article in the New York Times.
Hippie Sounds is currently just striking out. On that note we’ve yet to cover all my likes and dislikes. Let’s suffice it to say that Hippie Sounds’ now has a double dislike of Nugent, who couldn’t just leave the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love alone.
The Times has the whole shindig going on. However, I’m gonna take a stand and say, “Not worth your time.” Rolling Stone has enough of the 411 to leave an impression. Not a good impression mind you.
Here are a couple of highlights.
- Hippies (past and present) are responsible for “rising rates of divorce, high school drop-outs, drug use, abortion, sexual diseases and crime, not to mention the exponential expansion of government and taxes.”
- Regarding folks we do actually like around here, such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison, Nugent said, “I often wonder what musical peaks they could have climbed had they not gagged to death on their own vomit.” And yes, drugs — not always good. But man, show some respect.
Personally I like Ted’s big opener in The Times:
“Turned off by the work ethic and productive American Dream values of their parents, hippies instead opted for a cowardly, irresponsible lifestyle of random sex, life-destroying drugs and mostly soulless rock music that flourished in
“Mostly soulless rock music” (gasp). This music paved the way for him and others. He seemingly hates most of the individuals who came from the 60s and 70s — his own generation, his own peers in the biz. He’s talking about individuals who likely forked over good money for his shows. Way to bite the hand that feeds you.
I don’t know, maybe if we all got guns and shot at defenseless animals he’d like us?
