The gift that keeps on giving
A classic. Kind of brings a tear to my eye…
A classic. Kind of brings a tear to my eye…
In honor of Mother’s Day, I’d like to share with you the words of wisdom passed down from my fabulous mom, Louise. The woman probably the furthest from a hippie on the planet.
You can pick your friends
You can pick your nose
But you can’t pick your friend’s nose.
How true that is.
And now a little something from French and Saunders
Ok. I have a thing for zombies. Really, who doesn’t? So when I was fussing around YouTube today looking for something fabulous to share I started thinking, “What can I find that has rotten limbs, bad breath and horrible teeth? Hmmmm, Amy Winehouse would be the obvious answer but that’s too easy. How about the Zombies instead?”
Oh stop it. You know you laughed. This one’s for you, Amy!
I looooooove granola. Yes, even the high-fat, bad for you, devil-worshipping granola that you eat with yogurt. Ergo, I thought I’d make some of my own this weekend with the girls and find a healthier way to enjoy it. I found a great blog with a granola recipe and story at Slashfood, make some for your mom this weekend and tell me how it turns out!
2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
1 cup peanuts or toasted almonds
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup toasted sunflower seeds
1/2 cup coconut (I always use unsweetened, but you can go for the sweetened kind if you’d like)
1/4 cup toasted wheat germ (I often omit this ingredient, as I tend to forget to buy it)
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup dried fruit (dried apricots, craisins and dried apple are all delicious choices)
scant 1/4 cup cooking oil (not olive)
1/2 cup honey
Mix the oat, nuts and grains in a large bowl. Measure oil into the measuring cup and swirl it around before pouring into bowl. Then measure out the honey in the same, unwashed cup. The oil will help the honey exit the cup. Toss everything together until evenly coated and then pour out into a baking pan. I use a large roasting pan, as it keeps everything contained. A cookie sheet with a lip also works, but you have to stir it slightly more carefully if you use that. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes, turning it with a spatula every ten minutes or so. You want everything to be an even golden brown. When it is finished cooking, returned the baked granola to the mixing bowl, add the raisins and fruit and stir to combine. Stir gently several times as it cooks, so that it doesn’t clump together too much. Enjoy!

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed,
In love’s hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants
CHORUS
MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down…
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
’cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Oh, no! (oh god no, Donna, not again! Oh hell, there’s more)
I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees
CHORUS
There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You’ll still be the one.
I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky.
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I’ll be thinking of you
And wondering why. (I don’t wonder why. Seriously. I need mind bleach. )
MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down…
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
’cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
Oh NO!!
help.
me.
No comparison here. Though I miss Kurt and love what Dave’s done after Nirvana (note to Dave: No, I’m not a stalker, just a…fan. CALL ME), my heart belongs to Bowie. I must ruffle that hair for myself. grrrrowl.
You tell me, Bowie or Nirvana? Who’s got the chops this week?
Veeeeeeeeeeery interesting. Or not, if you’re not a fan of the Beatles (shame on you). Sharp-eyed reader, Bena Warren, sent me this link on the new Indie mockumentary Desperately Seeking Paul McCartney, coming out ?? Heck, if Paris Hilton can make a career out of posing, why not throw this poor woman a bone and go see it?
You know, that last post got me thinking. It’s been a while since I tripped down the aisle but there are young (and old) hippies everywhere taking that last step into commitment this year - and hell, they need some tunes.
Here’s my Top Five list of awesome hippie wedding songs:
Goofy? Corny? You bet. What else would go along with bare feet and the everlasting image of your dad humming along to Puff the Magic Dragon at the reception?
What are your suggestions for awesome hippie wedding songs?
